One of three activities organized by the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Kunming, China's highest-altitude marathon is expected to attract more than 20,000 runners this year. The SCO includes five ‘Stan states, as well as India and Russia, and is widely regarded as the "Alliance of East", due to the growing influence of the Asia-Pacific region. This event is of great significance to Yunnan, as it becomes an important hub on the “One Belt One Road” network. Leaders are also keen to promote the provincial capital’s healthy environment and mild climate, making it an ideal center for sports events of all kinds.

The 2018 SCO Kunming International Marathon is the third running of the event since 2016. In December 2016, 10,000 runners from 26 countries competed. In December 2017, the second marathon attracted 16,000 athletes from 28 countries around the world.
