Situated right south of Dali and the Er'hai Lake (about 1.5 hours by car), Weishan City is still an insider tipp, a bit off the beaten track and at the same time relatively easy to reach. Once a year in spring, people from the area gather in Weishan Old Town to celebrate and offer their snacks, called 小吃 (xiao chi) in Chinese.
Weishan is an Autonomous County of the Yi and Hui and belongs to the greater Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture. Weishan was listed as a National Historical and Cultural City already in 1988. It belongs to one of the four counties which have been celebrated as “literature of the state”. As the birth place of Nanzhao (a local regime in ancient China), a lot of relics and stories can be traced here.
There are altogether 23 ethnic groups in Weishan County, among which 6 ethnic groups have settled there for more than 100 years now, including the people of the Han, Yi, Hui, Bai, Miao and Lisu ethnicities.
The snacks of Weishan are very famous all over Yunnan and the upcoming Weishan Snack Festival will be held from March 16th to 20th, 2016. A good option to experience what Yunnan is famous for: good food and colourful ethnic minorities. Below some pictures of past Snack Festivals in Weishan:
