This morning (Aug. 9) a 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck Jinghe County, a very remote area of Xinjiang province. Luckily no casualties were reported by the authorities. Some trains and flights were delayed and cancelled afterwards.

The quake followed a stronger earthquake (magnitude 7.0) last night at 21:19 (Aug. 8) in Jiuzhaigou County, Sichuan province. The epicentre was located about 35 kilometres from Jiuzhaigou County, an area inhabited by some 20 thousand people. The Chinese Earthquake Network Centre have reported 19 victims and over 250 people injured so far.

Jiuzhaigou is a very popular destination for tourists, especially during the summer holidays. The senic site has suffered major damage and is temporarily closed to the public until further notice. Because of the earthquake, several roads in the area are not accessible.

President Xi Jinping has called for all-out efforts to rapdidly orgnize relief work and rescue people who are still trapped.  In Jiuzhaigou,  a level-1 emergency, the highest out of  4-level earthquake response system, was issued.

Up to now, aftershocks are still happening. We at Wonders Of Yunnan Travel want to kindly remind people travelling to the affected areas to take care and get in touch with us for any travel related information.
