As the largest festival in Dali, the March Street has since long drawn thousands of people to the old town, local markets and to the greatest celebration of the local Bai minority itself every year. This event is a local and ethnic tradition since over one thousand years and the oldest festival in Yunnan's west.
The celebration starts with a sacrifice for the Buddhist goddess Avalokiteshvara and then gradually turns into a huge market and celebration. Since the year 2008, March Street of the Bai people is listed as one of the non-material cultural heritage of China.
March Street takes place every year from the 15th day of the third lunar month to the 21st day. Translated this means that in 2016 the festival takes place from April 21st to 27th. During this period, visitors to Dali have the opportunity to see various perfomances, from singing antiphonal songs, dancing as well as horse racing. At the markets, snacks from different areas around Dali can be tasted and one can go shopping with local residents.
