As it gets colder in the northern hemisphere, Kunming is still warm and sunny for most of the time in winter. This attracts thousands of Siberian seagulls that migrate to the relatively mild climate of Yunnan. With countless seagulls in the sky, bird-watching has become a very popular local activity and even a part of tradition in Kunming. The seagull season lasts from October until March of the following year. Here are 5 seagull-watching spots you absolutely cannot miss.
Green Lake Park （翠湖公园）
Green Lake Park is the best place to watch seagulls near downtown Kunming. It is a free-entry park with great views. Besides seagulls, you can also experience local people playing music, dancing, practicing tai-chi and more...
Time: All day long (seagulls sleep when it’s dark!)
Haigeng Dam （海埂大坝）
After a renovation over the past few months, the breadth of Haigeng Dam has been widened, which offers a greater scenic view of Western Hills and Dianchi Lake. This is also the place where seagulls gather the most. Thousands of seagulls appear every day, attracting millions of visitors yearly.
Time: All day long
Haigeng Park （海埂公园）
The southern part of Haigeng Park is connected to Dianchi Lake, giving you a good view of the shoreline. You can take a walk in the park, or even take a cable car to Western Hills, enjoying the full view of Dianchi Lake along the way.
Time: 8:00 - 18:00
Daguan Pavilion （大观楼）
Daguan Pavilion is also a good choice to watch seagulls. There are bunch of seagulls frolicking around the pavilion in the park everyday. Here you can find a great combination of Chinese ancient pavilions, lovely seagulls, stone bridges and the altogether unique scenery of the Spring City.
Time: 10:00 - 17:00
Huanxi Bridge （环西桥）
Most of the seagulls here are flying from Haigeng Dam in the morning. It is very easy for people who live nearby to watch and feed them. Besides seagulls, there is a famous local market (Zhuanxin Market) nearby, with many stalls selling fresh produce, local delicacies, daily items and much more. It is a great opportunity to experience the authentic local lifestyle here.
