The Chinese New Year, also known as Spring Festival (春节, Chunjie), is the most important holiday for Chinese and other nations in Asia. People who work or study in other cities usually go back to their hometown to celebrate this big day with their families. About 40 days around Spring Festival (this year on February 8th), the country's infrastructure is meeting a big challenge: the year's highest transportation peak on road, railway and in the air puts respective companies, the government and actually also everyone else under a huge pressure. Every year it is a very special 'going home atmosphere'!

The transportation numbers of past Spring Festival holiday season tells its own tale. In 2015, an estimated 3.7 billion persons were travelling within, out of, or into China. It is so far the largest periodic human migration in the history of human being.

Spring Festival's high-transport-season of 2016 already started with the beginning of school holiday on January 24th and will slow down again in early March. Train tickets for this period are usually open for sale 60 days prior to departure and very easily booked out. It is - as every year - recommended to get such tickets as early as possible if one wants to be part of the crowd!
