Camping is getting more and more popular among many city dwellers, especially those who love outdoor activities. Having great options for mountain biking and trekking in the greater Kunming area, also several recommended campsites can now be found. Find below a small selection:

 

Zhenfeng Manor (振峰庄园), Wuhua District (20 km from downtown)

The nearest campsite to Kunming City is located in the Bai ethnic town of Shalang (沙朗). The manor is a comprehensive country tourism resort integrating ecological agriculture plantation, vegetable and fruit picking, agricultural product processing and delivery, vacation, various culture projects and - camping. The manor and professional outdoors clubs have jointly developed idyllic cycling lanes in the beautiful landscapes around, including forests, green meadows and lakes. Furthermore, a natural campsite has been set up in the manor from where visitors can start their outdoor activities such as orienteering, hiking, and mountain climbing.

Many local people like to spend their weekends here as the manor is only a rough 30-40 minutes’ drive by car from the downtown area.

Dadieshui (大叠水), Tuanjie Subdistrict, Xishan District (40 km from downtown)

The Dadieshui Camping Park is located in Douzui Village (陡嘴村) 40 km from Kunming downtown, covering an area over 5 square kilometers. It is a comprehensive site integrating leisure, entertainment, adventure, hiking and camping. In different seasons of the year, the park is nice to visit for a variety of plants, including: January-February: plum blossoms; March-May: wild cherry flowers; June-July: wild waxberries; August-September: prickly ash berries; October-December: maple trees.

  2. From Huangtupo (黄土坡) in Kunming, take the public bus No. 61 to Tuan Jie Town Baizu Garden (团结镇白族园).

 

Dongcun Village in Fumin County (富民东村) (72 km from Kunming)

The village of Dongcun is located on the riverbank of Pudu River. In this area, a hot spring called Primitive Tribe with more than a dozen beautifully arranged ponds can be found. Visitors pay 30 RMB and can enjoy warm water from 8am to 11pm. Especially on weekends, locals like to enjoy camping and barbeque here. As there are not so many farmhouses around who rent out rooms, visitors started to take their own camping gear.

  2. Take the overland bus from Kunming to Fumin and get on a local mini van to bring you to Dongcun.

 

Taiyanggu Valley, Yiliang County (98 km from downtown)


Taiyanggu Valley is located at Xiaoshao Village (小哨村) which is primarily known for wild mushroom hunting. 98 km from Kunming in Yiliang County, the village is a good starting point for camping and hiking in the valley close to Shiban River Waterfalls (石板河瀑布). The 10km long brook with crystal clear waters and numerous waterfalls is called Qinxi. Behind the visitors centre of Xiaoshao Village, an uphill track can be found. Because of the well kept ecological system, this area is full of dense vegetation and fresh air. Plus the convenient facilities, many visitors choose to camp here.

  2. Take a public bus to Yiliang Bus Station (宜良客运站) from Kunming Eastern Bus Station (昆明东部汽车客运站), then get on a local mini van to bring you to Taiyanggu Valley.

Changhu Lake (长湖), Shilin County (110 km from downtown)

Pitch your tent at Changhu Lake at an elevation of 1907 meters. Just south of famous Stone Forest, the small lake is nestled between hills and forests and has a circumference of 5.5 kilometres and a depth of maximum 24 metres. The picturesque lake with limpid water is said to be the hometown of Ashima, a legendary Yi ethnic girl. In the past, the lake was rarely known, hence it is also called The Hidden Lake among locals. The vegetation around the lake is well preserved and the environment quiet. Camp and barbeque at the lake for a quiet night, enjoying the chirping of insects and the stars at a cloudless night.

  2. Bus ride from Kunming East Bus Station (昆明东部汽车客运站) to Shilin County East Bus Station (石林东部客运站), then transfer bus No. 65 to Weize Town which is about 2.5 kilometres or 30 minutes's walk to the Lake.
