On September 16 the 22nd Session of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) General Assembly came to a successful conclusion. This was the second session held in China and the sixth session in the Asian and Pacific region.

This important global meeting was attended by senior tourism officials and high-level delegates from 161 states and representatives from over 500 UNWTO affiliate members representing public and private organizations, destinations, NGOs and educational institutions.

Tourism and the Sustainable Development Goals take centre stage

Tourism plays a very important leading role in the economic growth, inclusive development and environmental sustainability. Great efforts were made to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals agreed upon by nearly 200 nations to reduce poverty and foster sustainable development worldwide.

In the year of Sustainable Tourism for Development (IYSTD), the 22nd World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) 2017 gave us an invaluable opportunity to reach a global and  high-level audience in order to deliver these universal goals. This event was therefore themed “Tourism and the Sustainable Development Goals – Journey to 2030”.
