The Dragon Boat Festiival is one of numerous Chinese holidays that is celebrated according to the Lunar Calendar: the 5th day of the 5th month falls on Tuesday, 30.May this year. The public holiday lasts three days from 28.May to 30.May. As many other businesses, our office stays closed during these three days. As a small compensation, we will be working on upcoming Saturday, 27.May.

Also know as Duanwujie (端午节) in China, the festival's history and tradition reaches back for over 2000 years. Eating and making Zongzi (糯米, sweet or salty sticky rice wrapped into palm, bamboo or reed leaves) and also performing dragon boat races on lakes and rivers are the most popular festival customs.

As so often, dozens of legends are connected to this festival. One of them is about the patriotic poet and minister Qu Yuan: the sticky rice as well as the dragon boat races are commemorating his death, as it is said that he has committed suicide by drowning himself in the Miluo River in Hunan's north on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, rather than falling into captivity. Local people raced their boats onto the river to search for his body and dropped lumps of rice into the river so the fish would not feast on his body.

Whatever you will do in the upcoming days, we are wishing everyone a great Dragon Boat Festival!
