Dianchi Lake
Dianchi Lake, located just southwest of Kunming City, was known to be not the cleanest. To improve the water quality, numerous wetlands have been created along its shoreline. They're good for the environment and also offer a beautiful and peaceful scenery for visits just outside the city!
Kunming is a big city and it's still getting bigger. For this reason, a couple of years ago, a 'new' Kunming was built south of the initial center, called Chenggong, some 30 km away. Urban planners have not only built new high-rise buildings but also a wetland park at the shore of Dianchi Lake.
End of October, we could already welcome the first Siberian seagulls to Kunming. In the meanwhile, it seems that the've all arrived as the lakes and channels in and around Kunming are densely populated with migratory birds. Find out, where it's best to watch them between October and March.
As every year when it gets colder in the northern hemisphere, thousands of Siberian seagulls migrate to Yunnan to hibernate in the relatively mild climate of South China. Usually, we are expecting them in November earliest but this year, they somehow are in a hurry and arrived in October already.
Kunming's biggest landmark, the Dianchi Lake is worth a visit! Also if you won't be able to swim in it, there are plenty of options visiting its shores and close sights as well as enjoying the great view over lake and city. This is a day trip recommendation to Yunnan's biggest lake!
