Fuxian Lake, some 80km southeast of Kunming City is the deepest fresh water lake of China. It is known for its clean water and is a popular weekend destinations for people from the city especially during the hotter months of the year: with its over 150m of depth it stays nice and cool. People living at its shores use the water directly as drinking water.
At the northern end of the lake lies the city of Chengjiang, where the buses go from Kunming's Southern Bus Terminal. Around the lake smaller fisher villages can be found. But also new resorts and cozy guesthouses have been built already, accommodating the rising numbers of visitors. While the western and northern shore is popular for lake visitors, the eastern and southern end are more quiet and cheaper.
Chengjiang County is famous among paleantologists as important fossil finds were made about a century ago: the over 520 million year old Maotian Shales. "They contain an exquisite degree of detail, cover a diverse range of fauna, and are significant in attempts to understand the evolution of life on Earth." (wikipedea)
For visiting the area a minimum of 2 days with one overnight stay is recommended. Getting there by car takes about 1.5-2 hours.
