Other than the majority of Chinese public holidays, the International Worker's Day or Labour Day (劳动节 – láo dòng jié) or more colloquially "May Day" (五一节 – wǔ yī jié) is not tied to the lunar calendar but is celebrated on May 1st like in many other countries all over the world. This year, the holiday is on upcoming Monday, Mai 1st 2017. While government offices, banks and also our office will enjoy a long weekend, most of the shops and of course tourist attractions are open.

Traveling Yunnan in May is nice. The weather is good and the rainy season hasn't really started yet. Visitors to Yunnan and China should be aware though that not only thousands but millions of domestic travellers will be on the road and using this upcoming long weekend to get out and explore the country. Expect train tickets to be sold out, traffic jams on roads to special sights, crowded cities and delays. It is not as bad as during Spring Festival but preparing a bit for travelling during the May holiday is highly recommended.

An overview of other public Chinese holidays can be found here

We will be back on duty on Tuesday, 2.May. If you like to contact us during the short holiday, please do so here. We'll be right back upon our return.

Wishing you a work-free Labour Day,

Wonders Of Yunnan Travel Team
