A VPN is a very useful tool that enables us to access the unfortunately quite severely censored part of the internet. When living and also traveling in China, a VPN can save you from bigger hassle entering your accounts on Google, Facebook and other platforms. Some VPN recommendations.

With an average elevation of around 2000 meters above sea level, Yunnan features huge differences in altitude: while Yunnan's north borders Tibet and the Eastern Himalayas (up to 6740 m), the subtropical landscapes of the south are not higher than 100 meters.

While Kunming is waiting for its proper subway network, the public buses around town are a useful alternative. For either one or two RMB per single bus ride, you will be able getting all over town, including most of Kunming's major attractions. Hop on!

Lugu Lake is a very beautiful place, roughly 200 km northeast of Lijiang by road. But it's exactly this road which still makes it very difficult to reach the remote area. Especially during rainy summer seasons like now, floods and landslides are a daily occurence!

The one hundred chicken temple, as Baiji Temple (百鸡寺) would be translated, dates back to the Yuan Dynasty (1271 - 1368). It is located in the west of Shangri-La's Dukezong Ancient Town and offers an amazing bird's eye view of the ancient town and the surrounding city.

Rainy season in Yunnan usually starts in May. At the same time it's the start of Yunnan's wild mushroom season and from June onwards they gradually appear on local markets - especially after heavy rain showers. During July and August they also get more and more affordable.

Kunming's metro system is very new and therefore still quite incomplete. While there is a metro station close to our office, many other people in town still are waiting for their direct underground connection. This is what our metro system currently has to offer.

It's end of May and by now the rainy season has begun in Kunming and other parts of Yunnan. The majority of Yunnan's yearly precipitation falls between May and October. Not so nice for sighseeing but a blessing for local agriculture and general water supply after about half a year of sunshine!
