China is the world's most populous country with a population of about 1.35 billion. At the same time it's the 3rd largest country in the world (over 9,5 million sq km). It consists of 22 provinces, 5 autonomous regions, 4 directly controlled municipalities and 2 special administrative regions.
China's capital is Beijing and its largest city is Shanghai with over 23 million people. More than one-fifth of the world's total population lives within China's borders! Almost half of the country's surface is mountainious area, one of the reasons why the big majority of the population lives in the wide lowlands, close to the east coast. The climate and a rich variety of nature and environment are equally diverse as the over 3000 years of culture, ethnic population, traditional religion and of course language and cuisine.
