The New Yunnan Provincial Museum is located in Kunming’s south on Guangfu Road in Guandu District, right across the street of Guandu Old Town. The museum houses an exhibition centered on Yunnan's ethnic minorities, as well as a collection of artifacts from tomb excavations at Jinning on the southern rim of Dianchi Lake.
Initially built in 1951, this museum has moved from Kunming downtown to Guandu and has re-opened its doors on 18. May 2015. It covers an area of 150 acres with a building area of 60,000 square meters. The design inspiration of the new museum originates from the Yunnan Folk House, called Yi Ke Yin and the exterior shape of the main building has been inspired by the geological features of Stone Forest.
